Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, marked a significant milestone today as he celebrated his 75th birthday. Known for his visionary leadership, Sheikh Mohammed has played a pivotal role in shaping Dubai into a global hub of innovation and progress over several decades.
Under his stewardship, Dubai has evolved from a modest port city into a futuristic metropolis renowned for its groundbreaking initiatives in technology, infrastructure, and human development. His ambitious vision has propelled the emirate onto the world stage, attracting millions of visitors annually and setting new benchmarks in urban development.
“Today, we celebrate a visionary leader, a wise teacher, a loving father, and a beacon of kindness,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Emirates Airline & Group. “His dedication and wisdom continue to inspire us to dream bigger and aim higher.”
Sheikh Mohammed’s journey began in 1949 when he was born into the esteemed Al Maktoum family in Dubai’s Al Shindagha area. His education, which included studies at the Bell School of Languages in Cambridge and military training in the UK, laid the foundation for his early leadership roles within the UAE.
In 1968, at the age of 22, Sheikh Mohammed became the Head of Dubai Police and Public Security, marking the start of his illustrious career in public service. He swiftly rose to become the world’s youngest Minister of Defence in 1971, overseeing crucial portfolios such as Dubai Airport and the Jebel Ali Free Zone.
In 1995, he ascended to the role of Crown Prince of Dubai, where he initiated transformative projects like the Dubai Shopping Festival and bolstered Dubai’s global appeal as a commercial and cultural hub.
However, it was his assumption of the role of Dubai’s Ruler in 2006, following the passing of his brother Sheikh Maktoum, that cemented his legacy as a transformative leader. His administration has been marked by landmark achievements including the construction of iconic landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, and the Dubai Mall.
Beyond infrastructure, Sheikh Mohammed has championed initiatives in education, technology, and sustainability, positioning Dubai as a leader in the knowledge economy. Initiatives like the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, which successfully launched the Hope Probe to Mars in 2020, underscore his commitment to pushing boundaries and fostering innovation.
Sheikh Mohammed’s impact extends globally through his establishment of free zones like Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City, which have attracted international corporations and solidified Dubai’s reputation as a global business hub.
As he celebrates his 75th birthday, Sheikh Mohammed remains committed to shaping Dubai’s future through initiatives such as the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and continued investments in artificial intelligence and renewable energy.
His leadership style, characterised by hands-on management and a focus on efficiency, continues to serve as a model for governance both in Dubai and beyond. Sheikh Mohammed’s active presence on social media platforms further enhances his accessibility and engagement with citizens and residents.
