The Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA) has unveiled a series of strategic initiatives to secure and modernise the emirate’s water infrastructure, with a total investment of AED4 billion.
At the centre of these efforts is the Al Hamriyah Independent Water Desalination Plant, capable of producing up to 90 million gallons of water daily, enhancing supply reliability for Sharjah and surrounding areas.
Engineer Faisal Al Serkal, Head of SEWA’s Water Department, highlighted additional key projects, including three pumping stations and nine water storage reservoirs with a combined capacity of 180 million gallons. These facilities will be strategically located in Al Zubair, Al Badi’, and Al Burair.
SEWA is also constructing 245 kilometres of main water pipelines to efficiently connect the new infrastructure and improve water distribution across the emirate.
Pipeline Network Expansion
A major pipeline linking Al Houma to Al Falaj station is already under construction. Measuring 1,600 mm in diameter and 8 km in length, this segment is valued at approximately AED105.5 million and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
This pipeline forms part of a larger 77 km transmission network from the Al Hamriyah plant to Al Falaj station, with an overall cost of AED645 million. Contractors have been appointed for the construction of the reservoirs and pumping stations, with individual project costs estimated at AED505 million (Al Zubair), AED460 million (Al Badi’), and AED446.85 million (Al Burair).
The entire program is slated for completion by the third quarter of 2027, ensuring Sharjah’s water system is robust, resilient, and capable of meeting growing demand.
