Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, and Chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, has unveiled the blueprint for the upcoming Abha International Airport in the Aseer region.
The expansion plan encompasses a significant increase in the terminal area, growing from the current 10,500 square metres to an impressive 65,000 square metres, according to Gulf Business.
First Phase to Conclude by 2028 with Enhanced Facilities
The first phase of development is expected to conclude by 2028, introducing features such as passenger boarding bridges, self-service facilities for streamlined travel procedures, and spacious parking facilities.
The design of the new airport will capture the architectural essence of the Asir region and celebrate Saudi culture, aligning with the region’s growth as a tourism hub.
This expansion will boost Abha Airport’s capacity to host over 13 million passengers annually, a tenfold increase from the current 1.5 million capacity.
It will also handle more than 90,000 flights per year, a significant rise from the current 30,000 flights. The new airport will encompass 20 gates, along with 41 check-in counters featuring seven new self-service check-in kiosks.
In line with Vision 2030, this project will align with Aseer’s development strategy and aviation strategy by enhancing air connectivity to 250 destinations and accommodating 330 million passengers.
