Saudi Arabia has emerged as the fastest-growing tourism market among G20 nations, showcasing remarkable growth in international tourist arrivals. According to the United Nations Tourism Organisation’s (UNTO) latest data, the Kingdom saw a 73% increase in international tourists in the first seven months of 2024, compared to the same period in 2019. This surge also translated into a 207% rise in international tourism revenues, demonstrating Saudi Arabia’s rising appeal as a global destination.
Between January and July 2024, Saudi Arabia welcomed approximately 17.5 million international visitors. This continued growth builds upon the Kingdom’s 2023 performance, where it attracted 27.4 million tourists—an increase of 56% from 2019.
In that same year, travel receipts reached a record surplus of SAR 48 billion ($12.8 billion), reflecting a 38% year-on-year increase.
This rapid growth in tourism is aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the Kingdom’s economy by reducing its dependence on oil. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) praised Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector in its September 2024 Article IV Consultation, highlighting its role in boosting the country’s services sector. Tourism has become a key driver of growth in visitor numbers, spending, job creation, and contribution to GDP. The Kingdom’s diverse and attractive tourism offerings, including cultural, religious, and leisure destinations, are seen as vital components in its efforts to establish itself as a premier global destination.
The success of Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector is expected to continue in the coming years, positioning the country as a leader in the global tourism market while reinforcing its status among major tourist destinations.
With a focus on sustainable tourism practices, enhanced infrastructure, and a commitment to cultural heritage preservation, Saudi Arabia aims to create an enriching experience for visitors, fostering international partnerships and showcasing its rich history and vibrant traditions.
