RWE has signed a provisional agreement with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to explore long-term LNG supply options for Germany and wider European markets, as Berlin accelerates efforts to diversify energy partnerships.
LNG supply framework
Under the framework agreement, RWE will assess the potential purchase of up to 1 million metric tonnes of LNG annually for up to 10 years. Moreover, the volumes would support Germany and other European markets amid shifting global energy flows. RWE operates not only as a power producer but also as an importer and trader of gas and LNG, with Qatar remaining its largest shareholder.
“I am very pleased about our strategic collaboration with ADNOC, which underscores our shared commitment to securing Europe’s energy needs,” RWE CEO Markus Krebber said. “Our plans build on a successful and long-lasting partnership.”
Germany’s diversification drive
Germany has steadily reduced its reliance on Russian gas since 2022. As a result, Norway has become its largest gas supplier, while the United States now provides most LNG imports. However, relations with Washington have been strained anew, prompting Berlin to broaden its supplier base.
Broader Gulf cooperation
Additionally, RWE agreed with Masdar to jointly invest in up to 2 gigawatts of battery storage projects in Germany. Therefore, the Gulf region continues to gain strategic importance as a long-term partner for energy and technology cooperation, reflecting Germany’s evolving energy security priorities.
