Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a comprehensive project aimed at enhancing Al Wasl Road.
The upgrade will cover a 15 km stretch, running from the junction with Umm Suqeim Street to the intersection with 2nd December Street. The plan includes improvements across six intersections, featuring the enhancement of one junction and the construction of five tunnels with a combined length of 3,850 metres.
The road will be expanded from two to three lanes in each direction. Once completed, the project is expected to cut travel times on Al Wasl Road by half and boost capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said: “The Al Wasl Road Development Project is part of a broader masterplan to upgrade the area’s road infrastructure, which also includes improvements to Umm Suqeim Street and Al Safa Street.”
“These initiatives place strong emphasis on creative and aesthetic features, integrating dedicated pedestrian paths, cycling lanes, boulevards, and lively public spaces that encourage community engagement. The design also incorporates decorative landscaping and the development of vibrant urban settings,” he noted.
He added that the project supports a key district known for its diverse mix of contemporary lifestyle and tourism destinations, including beaches, upscale hotels, dining venues, and residential communities that accommodate over one million people.
Al Tayer reiterated that the development spans 15 km from Umm Suqeim Street to 2nd December Street and includes widening Al Wasl Road to three lanes in both directions.
