Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has opened Phase I of the Hessa Street Development Project, covering a 4.5-kilometre stretch between Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road.
The completed works include widening Hessa Street and constructing bridges at its intersections with Al Asayel Street, First Al Khail Street and Sheikh Zayed Road, increasing road capacity to four lanes in each direction.
The opening is expected to improve traffic movement for motorists travelling from Al Khail Road towards Hessa Street and onwards to Sheikh Zayed Road. Overall progress on the project has reached 90 per cent, with the remaining road works, bridges, intersection upgrades and cycling tracks scheduled for completion in the second quarter of this year.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said the Hessa Street Development Project, valued at around AED690 million, is being delivered in line with the leadership’s vision to advance Dubai’s road infrastructure, support sustained urban growth and address the demands of population expansion.
He noted that the project represents a major infrastructure upgrade serving key residential and development areas such as Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha and Jumeirah Village Circle. The population across these areas is projected to exceed 640,000 by 2030. Once completed, the project will double traffic capacity on Hessa Street from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Al Tayer added that the project spans 4.5 kilometres from the Sheikh Zayed Road intersection to Al Khail Road and involves upgrading four major intersections along Hessa Street. These include junctions with Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Road, alongside widening the road from two to four lanes in each direction. The scope also includes the development of a 13.5-kilometre cycling track as part of the capacity enhancement works.
He further explained that the project features dedicated cycling and e-scooter tracks extending 13.5 kilometres with a width of 4.5 metres. The route connects Al Sufouh with Dubai Hills via Hessa Street and serves residential communities such as Al Barsha and Barsha Heights. It supports first- and last-mile connectivity through direct links to Dubai Internet City Metro Station and major commercial and service hubs. The cycling track also includes architecturally distinctive bridges crossing Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, each five metres wide, accommodating cyclists, e-scooter users and pedestrians.
