Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 10 out of 16 Truck Rest Stops in collaboration with ADNOC. These facilities are strategically located along six key roads, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. They cover over 75,000 square metres and can accommodate more than 5,000 trucks with 700 parking slots. Each rest area spans 5,000 to 10,000 square metres and includes amenities like service facilities, prayer rooms, diesel refuelling stations, and rest rooms for drivers.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, stated that constructing these rest stops enhances traffic safety by reducing truck-related accidents by 50%. These facilities improve traffic flow during truck ban periods, raise traffic awareness among drivers, and prevent trucks from parking on main roads and in residential areas. The rest areas cater to the high volume of truck trips in Dubai, which exceeds 300,000 daily, carrying about 1.5 million tonnes of goods.
Al Tayer highlighted the strategic selection of locations for maximum effectiveness, ensuring safe entrances and exits while minimising the impact on residential areas. He also emphasised the growing public-private partnership in infrastructure projects, which enhances public services and facilitates the transfer of knowledge and innovation from the private sector to the public sector.
The partnership with ADNOC aims to reinforce Dubai’s position as a global logistics hub and improve the well-being of drivers by providing essential amenities. RTA has also conducted a comprehensive study on truck movements in Dubai to forecast future needs and evaluate current policies. In 2023, RTA and ADNOC agreed to construct an integrated truck rest area near Emirates Road, covering over 76,000 square metres and offering extensive services, including refuelling, maintenance, and driver facilities.
