Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Airports, has awarded a contract to expand and upgrade the bridge that provides access to Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport.
The initiative is designed to improve traffic flow towards the terminal, shorten travel times, and elevate customer convenience. It also seeks to support the rising passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport, which handled more than 92 million travellers in 2024.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, stated: “The project will expand the current bridge from three to four lanes by building an additional structure using an advanced system of steel box girders combined with a composite concrete slab. This method was chosen for its structural efficiency, enabling rapid delivery without traffic diversions on Airport Street or temporary supports beneath the bridge, ensuring continuous traffic flow and maximum safety.”
He further explained: “The bridge, including its ramps, will extend 171 metres, with the main span covering nearly 70 metres. The scope also includes road surfacing enhancements, utility upgrades, and landscaping to blend with the surrounding infrastructure, as well as the installation of modern street lighting to improve safety and visibility. Once completed, the expansion will boost the bridge’s capacity from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour, reflecting a 33% increase.”
Al Tayer emphasised RTA’s continued commitment to advancing Dubai’s road and transport systems, improving the efficiency of strategic corridors, and offering sustainable, adaptable mobility solutions. These efforts, he noted, will facilitate smoother movement for residents and visitors, enrich quality of life, and reinforce Dubai’s position as a leading global hub for major international events.
