Qatar Airways has acquired a 25 per cent stake in South Africa-based regional carrier Airlink as part of its strategy to expand across Africa.
The Doha-based airline stated that this investment will enhance the existing code-share partnership with Airlink and support its growth strategy on the continent. The deal is expected to increase Airlink’s capacity and broaden its marketing reach.
Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Qatar Airways’ group CEO, commented, “Our investment in Airlink underscores the importance of Africa to our future business.”
He added that the partnership reflects confidence in Airlink’s resilience and financial strength, as well as in Africa’s potential, which they are excited to help realise.
Airlink operates to over 45 destinations in 15 African countries, while Qatar Airways serves 29 African destinations.
The investment aims to align the loyalty programmes of both carriers – Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Airlink Skybucks.
Airlink chief executive Rodger Foster noted that the deal would enhance growth by achieving economies of scale and expanding marketing reach, benefiting existing airline partnerships.
Financial details of the investment were not disclosed. Qatar Airways is also a major shareholder in British Airways owner International Airlines Group and holds stakes in Cathay Pacific and Latam Airlines Group. It is in discussions to acquire around 20 per cent of Virgin Australia Airlines and a minority stake in RwandAir.
In 2023/24, Qatar Airways’ profit rose by 39 per cent to $1.7B, with revenues reaching a record $81B.
