OpenAI unveiled the release of GPT 4o – ‘o’ for ‘omni’ – the most recent update to its artificial intelligence model that powers ChatGPT. GPT-4o is projected to be twice as rapid and will be priced at half of GPT-4 Turbo.
“At the OpenAI Spring Update event, Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, stated, “GPT-4o reasons across voice, text, and vision. Additionally, with these remarkable efficiencies, it permits us to offer the GPT-4o intelligence to our free users.”
“It will be available for free to all users, while paid users will maintain up to five times the capacity limits of free users,” she added.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that until now, GPT-4 class models were exclusively accessible to subscribers paying a monthly fee.
“This is crucial to our mission; we aim to provide excellent AI tools to everyone,” he remarked.
The firm revealed that GPT-4o will be introduced gradually and will accommodate over 50 languages, including various Indian languages.
In a blog post, the company also stated that the model can react to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, averaging 320 milliseconds, akin to human response time in a conversation.
Moreover, it highlighted that GPT-4o attains GPT-4 Turbo-level performance in text, reasoning, and coding intelligence, whilst setting new benchmarks in multilingual, audio, and vision capabilities.
OpenAI additionally declared the release of the desktop version of ChatGPT and an updated user interface.
For both unpaid and paid users, the company is introducing a new ChatGPT desktop application for macOS. It intends to launch a Windows version later this year.
“We recognise that these models are becoming increasingly intricate, but we want the interaction experience to feel more natural, effortless, and for users to concentrate solely on collaboration with GPTs,” Murati emphasised.
