Lionel Messi’s contract with Paris St Germain (PSG) will not be extended after he took an “unauthorized trip” to Saudi Arabia, as reported by French sports daily L’Equipe and cited by Reuters. Even though Messi had a clause in his contract for an optional third season, the club officials have reportedly chosen not to activate it.
According to the report, Messi was supposed to practice with the team on Tuesday but faced a two-week suspension because he did not show up, following a 3-1 loss against Lorient in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Instead of practicing with the team, the 35-year-old went to Saudi Arabia with his family, and as a consequence, he is not allowed to participate in any team activities. In addition, his pay will be reduced during the suspension period, according to the report. As a result of the suspension, Messi will not be able to play in the upcoming Ligue 1 matches against Troyes and Ajaccio. However, he may be back in action for the game against Auxerre on May 21 and will be eligible to play for the club until the end of the season on June 3.
