Masdar City has launched trials for Level 4 autonomous vehicles under the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council’s strategy, partnering with smart mobility provider Solutions+, a Mubadala-owned company.
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) is managing the initiative by handling registration, testing, and operational approval of the autonomous vehicles to ensure safety, regulatory compliance, and alignment with Abu Dhabi’s smart mobility vision.
This project demonstrates the emirate’s commitment to leading innovation and shaping the future with technology. It also reinforces Masdar City’s role as a clean-tech hub and home to the Smart Autonomous Vehicles Industry cluster driving forward autonomous transport.
Level 4 autonomy marks a significant breakthrough in self-driving technology, allowing vehicles to operate entirely on their own within a predefined, geofenced area.
Masdar City serves as a “real-world testbed” for sustainable mobility, inviting manufacturers to test their Level 4 autonomous vehicles within its integrated urban environment, the Abu Dhabi Media Office (ADMO) confirmed in a statement.
Ahmed Baghoum, CEO of Masdar City, said: “Launching Level 4 testing represents a major advancement in autonomous vehicle capabilities, and we’re proud that Masdar City continues to lead this field. The initiative reflects our vision to shape future cities through innovation, digital integration, and environmental responsibility. By working with partners like Solutions+, we’re not just developing AV technology—we’re creating a more sustainable and efficient urban future for everyone.”
During the proof-of-concept phase, teams are monitoring how the technology performs in real-world UAE infrastructure and climate, gathering insights to guide the future of autonomous transport.
