A growing body of evidence underscores the detrimental impact of excessive screen time on children’s well-being. A new study from the University of Southern Denmark has shed light on the profound benefits of reducing screen exposure, with UAE experts echoing the findings.
Research indicates that children typically spend an alarming seven to eight hours daily on digital devices. However, a remarkable transformation can occur within just two weeks of limiting screen time to an average of three hours per week. Children exhibit improved emotional stability, reduced aggression, and enhanced concentration.
Dr. Ignatiius Edwin D’souza, a consultant pediatrician at Thumbay University Hospital, emphasized the multifaceted advantages of decreased screen time. “Beyond mental health benefits, reduced screen exposure can also lead to better sleep, improved mood, and stronger family bonds,” he explained. “While making this change may be challenging, consistency and patience are key.”
Excessive screen time has been linked to a host of physical and mental health issues, including eye strain, headaches, neck pain, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. The constant stimulation from digital devices can also hinder the development of essential life skills, such as social interaction, problem-solving, and creativity.
Liliane Kantar, a psychomotor therapist at Aman Lil Afia Clinic Dubai, highlighted the importance of balanced screen time. “Children need opportunities for physical activity, social interaction, and imaginative play to develop essential life skills,” she said. “Excessive screen time can impede these crucial developmental milestones.”
To foster healthier screen habits, experts recommend setting clear limits, creating screen-free zones, and engaging in alternative activities as a family. By prioritizing real-life experiences and interactions, parents can empower their children to thrive in a digital age.
Dr. Shaju George, a specialist psychiatrist at International Modern Hospital Dubai, stressed the immediate positive impact of reduced screen time. “Improved sleep, stronger relationships, and increased focus are just some of the benefits parents can expect to see,” he said.
Girish Hemnani, a Dubai-based energy healer and life coach, added, “A digital detox can be transformative for children, allowing them to rediscover their creativity, enhance their social skills, and cultivate a deeper connection with the world around them.”
By taking proactive steps to manage screen time, parents can create a healthier and more balanced environment for their children.
