Erling Haaland, the 22-year-old Manchester City player, has been named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year, as announced on Friday. Haaland’s exceptional performance in his first season in England earned him this prestigious title. He won the award with an unprecedented 82% of the votes, leaving Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka in second and third place, respectively.
Sam Kerr, who plays for Chelsea, has made history by becoming the first player to win the Women’s Footballer of the Year award twice. The Australian athlete received twice the number of votes compared to Rachel Daly from Aston Villa who came in second place, and Lauren James, who is also a part of Kerr’s team and secured the third spot.
In both clubs’ quests to defend their league crowns, Manchester City and Chelsea, respectively, both attackers have been instrumental. In a statement, Haaland said, “Winning the Football Writers’ Award in my first season playing English football is an honor. “I work hard to be the greatest version of myself every day, so it means a lot to me to be recognized in this way.”
