The second season of the Farmers’ Souq Initiative, which aimed to promote local agriculture and community engagement, has come to a close in Dubai. Over a period of four months, from 19th November 2022 to 18th March 2023, the event was held at Nakheel Park and attracted a total of 33,921 visitors.
The Farmers’ Souq Initiative was designed to provide a platform for Emirati farmers to sell their locally produced farm products directly to consumers, with the aim of boosting customers’ confidence in local agricultural products and drawing attention to the development achieved by the local agricultural sector.
According to Ahmed Al Zarooni, Director of the Department of Public Parks and Recreational Facilities in Dubai Municipality, the participation of Emirati farmers and small and medium-enterprise owners (SMEs) played a crucial role in the success of the initiative.
Al Zarooni emphasized that the initiative aimed to support the agricultural sector by offering diverse opportunities for the participants to trade, as well as raising awareness of the agricultural diversity in the Emirate, the significance of food security in Dubai, and the need to work continuously to achieve it, according to WAM.
Dubai Municipality provided logistical assistance and other requirements to support the local farmers, with a total of 50 farmers and SME owners participating in the event and displaying their goods, including vegetables, fruits, dairy products, honey, dates, and other household products.
The Souq also featured around 30 kiosks to sell food and beverages. Additionally, 69 workshops and activities were held throughout the four months of the Souq, including musical and other entertainment performances.
