The Etihad Rail is one of the UAE’s largest megaprojects, expected to connect all seven emirates by 2030. Often referred to as the UAE’s version of a high-speed train (though not officially named), this ambitious project has generated significant excitement. If you’re wondering how the route will unfold, here’s an overview.
The rail will stretch across the seven emirates, linking 11 cities and regions, from Al Sila, near the Saudi border, to Fujairah.
Speaking to What’s On, Ahmed Al Musawa, CEO of Oman & Etihad Rail Co, mentioned that the train service will make travel between emirates far more efficient, with travel times significantly reduced. For example, journeys will take:
- Abu Dhabi to Dubai: 50 minutes
- Abu Dhabi to Fujairah: 100 minutes
- Dubai to Fujairah: 50 minutes
- Abu Dhabi to Ruwais: 70 minutes
The 1,200 km network will connect key areas such as Ruwais, Al Mirfa, Fujairah, Sharjah, Al Dhaid, and Abu Dhabi.
In February 2023, Oman Rail and Etihad Rail, partnering with Mubadala, agreed on a 303km rail link between Sohar in Oman and Abu Dhabi, reducing travel time to just 100 minutes. This network will also extend westwards, reaching the borders of Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Additionally, the UAE recently signed a contract with Jordan to develop a 360km rail system. This collaboration could represent the first steps in a broader phase of inter-regional passenger travel across the GCC.
