The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has rolled out the emirate’s first vertical Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tank system designed specifically for food establishments. This innovative system replaces the traditional use of LPG cylinders, offering a safer, more efficient solution that meets modern regulatory and operational standards.
Each vertical tank can hold up to 125 gallons and comes fitted with an explosion-proof vaporiser. Unlike conventional setups, these tanks are refilled directly on-site by licensed operators. This not only eliminates the need to store or handle cylinders but also significantly reduces the risk of gas leaks and related incidents.
New technical bulletin outlines safety and regulatory framework
The initiative marks a milestone in Abu Dhabi’s drive to elevate safety protocols across high-risk sectors. To guide implementation, the DoE has issued Technical Bulletin No (1/2025), which details the technical criteria, safety protocols, and regulatory conditions for installing these vertical tanks. The framework aligns with the NFPA standards and the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code, ensuring full compliance with international best practices.
Dr Saif Saeed Al Qubaisi, Acting Director General for Regulatory Affairs at DoE, stated:
“This initiative reflects the department’s commitment to protecting individuals and communities by ensuring a safe operational environment for food establishments.”
He emphasised that LPG remains a critical energy source for the food sector, making the adoption of safer systems all the more essential.
Collaborative roll-out with private sector partners
The DoE has partnered with licensed private sector operators to approve and implement the vertical tank systems. According to Engineer Ahmed Al Sheebani, Executive Director of the Petroleum Products Regulatory Affairs Sector at DoE,
“The project aims to establish a safer and more sustainable system, enabling food establishments to operate with confidence and reliability while serving customers in line with international best practices.”
He noted that the system allows for a seamless transition from traditional gas use, particularly in areas not connected to underground gas networks or centralised LPG systems.
In its official communication, the DoE urged all food establishments across Abu Dhabi to adopt this advanced solution. By doing so, businesses can ensure compliance with both current and upcoming safety regulations while reducing operational hazards.
