Astronomers from the International Astronomical Centre anticipate that most Muslim-majority nations will mark Eid Al Fitr on April 10 based on forecasts regarding the sighting of the crescent moon.
Countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Morocco, initiated the month of Ramadan on March 12.
These regions are expected to witness the Shawwal crescent moon on April 9, according to Arabian Business.
Muhammad Shawkat Odeh, Director of the International Astronomy Centre, explains that the crescent will be visible with the unaided eye from Central Asia and parts of Africa on April 9, with telescopes facilitating observation in most other areas.
Countries like the Gulf states, which began Ramadan on March 11, will be unable to observe the young moon on April 8 due to the moon setting before the sun and the conjunction occurring after sunset, according to Odeh.
The Astronomy Centre’s website will compile data from crescent observations by over 1,500 volunteers globally to assist in determining official moon sightings.
While most countries are expected to celebrate Eid on April 10, India and Bangladesh might delay by a day if their observers fail to confirm sightings on April 9.
