Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has declared that 50% of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads Intersection Improvement Project is now complete. This initiative, overseen at the behest of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, entails constructing four bridges covering a total distance of 2,874 meters.
These bridges are specifically designed to handle a traffic capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour, as outlined in a statement from the Dubai Media Office.
RTA Chief: Project Aims to Strengthen Dubai’s Road Infrastructure
According to Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the project’s objective is to bolster Dubai’s road network infrastructure in response to the city’s continual urban and population growth.
Al Tayer emphasized the project’s crucial role in facilitating seamless traffic flow between key roads, stating, “The project is part of a plan to upgrade Garn Al Sabkha Street, a crucial project linking Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.” The initiative encompasses the construction of four purpose-specific bridges to enhance traffic flow.
Al Tayer provided details on the bridges, including one spanning 943 meters at the Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street intersection. This two-lane bridge accommodates 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, improving traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
Upon completion, the project aims to achieve a 40% reduction in travel distance and time for traffic moving from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, especially towards Al Qusais and Sharjah. Al Tayer also highlighted the reduction in peak hour journey times and overall travel durations for specific routes.
Covering 7 kilometres of road works, the Garn Al Sabkha – Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Roads Intersection Improvement Project includes enhancements to surface intersections, street lighting, traffic signs, traffic systems, rainwater drainage systems, and an irrigation network.
Al Tayer underscored that this project aligns with RTA’s Master Plan, aiming to upgrade strategic road networks and support Dubai’s transportation system, accommodating current and future traffic volumes on vital routes like Al Yalayis and Expo roads.
