Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revealed significant initiatives to alleviate traffic congestion and expedite journeys on Al Khail Road.
A contract valued at AED 700M ($191M) has been granted by Dubai’s RTA for the Al Khail Road Improvement Project.
The undertaking encompasses the construction of bridges spanning 3.3km and road improvement measures over 6.82km at seven locations along Al Khail Road, including Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle.
This project plays a vital role in augmenting the capacity of existing intersections and bridges by around 19,600 vehicles per hour. The objective is to streamline traffic along Al Khail Road, eliminate overlapping at flyovers, ensure smooth traffic flow, and reduce travel times in Dubai by 30 per cent.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, stated, “Al Khail Road Improvement Project stands out among the strategic projects aimed to enhance the capacity of roads that run parallel to and support Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.”
Al Khail Road Improvement: Zabeel Gets First Focus
The project’s focus extends to seven locations along Al Khail Road, beginning with Zabeel, particularly the stretch between Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street intersections in Dubai.
This encompasses the construction of a three-lane bridge spanning 700m, with a capacity for approximately 4,800 vehicles per hour. The bridge will link traffic from Zabeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Road directly onto Al Khail Road in the direction of Abu Dhabi.
Additionally, the project includes enhancements to surface roads covering 850m, connecting inbound traffic from Al Khail Road heading to Financial Centre Street in the direction of Sheikh Zayed Road.
The second location is Meydan along Al Khail Road between Al Meydan Road and Ras Al Khor Road intersections. It involves the construction of a two-lane bridge extending 610m, accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour. This bridge will link traffic from Al Meydan Road onto Al Khail Road in the direction of Deira, Dubai. Works at this site also incorporate improvements to surface roads spanning 1,550m, connecting traffic from Al Khail Road heading to Ras Al Khor Road.
Project Details for Al Quoz 1 and Ghadeer Al Tair Sites
Al Tayer stated, “At the third site in Al Quoz 1 on Al Khail Road between the intersections of Al Meydan Road and Al Waha Street, the project entails the construction of a two-lane bridge stretching 650m, accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour to link the traffic from Al Meydan Road onto Al Khail Road in the direction of Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, the project includes improvements to surface roads extending 2,170m, linking the traffic from Al Khail Road to Al Waha Street and Latifa bint Hamdan Street.
“The fourth site is located in Ghadeer Al Tair along Al Khail Road between the intersections of Al Meydan Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street. It includes the construction of a two-lane bridge extending 640m with a capacity to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour to link the traffic from Latifa Bint Hamdan Street onto Al Khail Road in the direction of Deira. Additionally, the project includes improvements on surface roads extending 1,350m to link the traffic coming from Al Khail Road heading to Al Meydan Road”.
Jumeirah Village Circle on Al Khail Road Set for Two-Lane Bridge and Road Upgrades
The fifth site at the Jumeirah Village Circle along Al Khail Road between Hessa Street and Al Khamila Street involves the construction of a two-lane bridge spanning 700m, accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour. This bridge will link traffic from Al Khail Road to Hessa Street. Furthermore, the project incorporates upgrades to 900m of surface roads, enhancing traffic connectivity from the Jumeirah Village Circle to Al Khail Road in the direction of Deira.
At the sixth site, the project includes surface widening works on Al Khail Road in Al Jaddaf, adding a new lane to enhance traffic flow in the direction of Deira and increasing the road’s capacity by approximately 2,000 vehicles per hour.
At the seventh site, the project involves constructing surface widening of Al Khail Road at the entrance to Business Bay, adding an extra lane to ensure a smoother flow to the Business Bay area from Al Khail Road and enhancing traffic safety in that sector of the road in the direction of Abu Dhabi.
In 2012, Dubai’s RTA completed the Al Khail Road Improvement Project, converting existing roundabouts into flyovers, ensuring smooth traffic flow in all directions, and widening the road to six lanes in each direction, according to Arabian Business.
