Dubai’s taxi sector has experienced a notable increase in both trips and passenger numbers during the first half of 2024. According to the latest statistics released by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), there were an additional 500,000 taxi trips recorded compared to the same period last year.
Increase in Trips and Passengers
The total number of taxi trips reached 55.7 million in the first half of 2024, up from 55.3 million during the corresponding period in 2023. Additionally, passenger numbers also rose, with a total of 96.9 million passengers using taxi services compared to 96.2 million in the first half of 2023.
Growth in Dubai Taxi Fleet and Drivers
The increase in demand has led to a growth in the number of taxis and drivers operating in Dubai. The RTA reported that the total number of taxis in operation reached 12,778, which is 644 more vehicles compared to last year. Furthermore, the number of taxi drivers has increased from 26,000 to 30,000 this year.
E-Hail Service and Efficiency Improvements
Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at the RTA’s Public Transport Agency, highlighted the consistent growth in the transportation industry over the last five years. A significant factor contributing to this growth is the rise in popularity of the e-hail service, Hala Taxi. E-bookings accounted for 40% of the total number of taxi journeys in Dubai during the first half of 2024, marking a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Shakri also noted that 76% of Hala journeys had an average vehicle arrival time of less than 3.5 minutes, surpassing the 73% rate achieved last year. This improvement reflects the continuous enhancements in efficiency and response speed to meet customer needs.
Conclusion
Dubai’s taxi sector is witnessing record growth, driven by increased demand and the implementation of efficient e-hail services. With a growing fleet and driver pool, the RTA is well-positioned to continue meeting the transportation needs of Dubai’s residents and visitors.
