Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed Phase Two of its Smart Pedestrian Signal Expansion Project, installing intelligent pedestrian signals at 10 new locations across the emirate. This brings the total number of smart signal-equipped sites to 27, following the first phase, which covered 17 intersections.
The project is part of RTA’s broader vision to integrate smart technologies into traffic management systems, aiming to enhance road safety, improve pedestrian and vehicle flow, and support Dubai’s ambition to lead in modern mobility infrastructure.
Phase Two included installations at intersections along Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, Al Satwa Street, Salah Al Din Street, Amman Street, Al Qusais Street near labour camps, and Oud Metha Street near the school zone. According to Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, these areas have reported noticeable improvements in safety since the signals became operational.
The smart pedestrian signals use advanced thermal imaging cameras that operate round the clock. These cameras can accurately detect pedestrian movement on pavements and crossings, even in low-light or night-time conditions. The system is also integrated with push-button devices to capture real-time crossing requests, allowing the signals to adjust timings efficiently and respond to actual pedestrian demand.
Al Ali confirmed that the system has successfully enhanced safety at key crossings and reduced risks for both pedestrians and motorists. The project represents a significant step in Dubai’s transition towards intelligent traffic solutions, making roads safer and more accessible for all users.
