Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the construction of 20 air-conditioned rest areas for delivery riders across the emirate, with plans for a total of 40.
The initiative is aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidents involving delivery drivers. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, stated that the project is part of the authority’s commitment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for delivery riders. He noted that the initiative supports the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy’s ‘Zero Fatalities’ vision, which aspires to make Dubai a global leader in traffic safety.
The construction of these rest areas aligns with the rapid growth in Dubai’s delivery sector, which has seen significant expansion due to increased public demand for goods. By the end of June 2023, there were 2,535 companies providing delivery services by motorcycle in Dubai, operating a total of 40,088 delivery bikes.
The rest areas have been strategically placed in high-demand zones such as Hessa Street, Al Barsha Heights, Al Karama, and Jumeirah. Each facility can accommodate up to 10 people and is equipped with air conditioning, snack vending machines, water dispensers, and mobile phone charging stations.
In addition to the rest areas, the RTA has introduced the Delivery Service Excellence Award to encourage competition among companies and drivers. This award aims to enhance traffic safety, promote adherence to regulations, and improve service quality in the delivery sector.
