Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a partnership with Pony.ai, a global leader in self-driving technology. The agreement marks the start of autonomous vehicle pilot trials in the emirate, with plans for a commercial launch in 2026.
Pony.ai’s seventh-generation vehicles were developed with major manufacturers like Toyota, GAC, and BAIC. These vehicles use artificial intelligence and advanced sensors—including lidars, radars, and cameras—to navigate safely in different road and weather conditions.
A Strategic Step Towards Dubai’s 2030 Mobility Goals
The signing ceremony brought together key figures from both sides. RTA’s Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan and Pony.ai’s Ann Shi signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), witnessed by RTA Chairman Mattar Al Tayer and Pony.ai CFO Dr. Leo Wang.
Al Tayer said the partnership supports Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy. The goal is to make 25% of all trips in Dubai autonomous by 2030. “This collaboration is part of our plan to create smarter, more efficient, and sustainable transport solutions,” he noted.
He added that autonomous taxis will help connect public transport users to their final destinations. This first-and-last-mile service is expected to improve road safety, convenience, and the overall quality of life in Dubai.
Dubai Becomes Global Hub for Pony.ai Expansion
Pony.ai, with roots in Silicon Valley and China, has already partnered with tech giants like Tencent and Alibaba. These collaborations integrate robotaxi services into apps such as WeChat and Alipay.
CFO Dr. Leo Wang described the Dubai deal as a key move in the company’s global strategy. “Working with the RTA allows us to bring Level 4 autonomy to a new region,” he said. “This partnership sets a strong foundation for intelligent transport in the Middle East and North Africa.”
Advancing Smart Mobility with Real-World Trials
The RTA believes these pilot trials are critical for understanding how autonomous taxis can serve Dubai’s residents and visitors. Officials expect these vehicles to play a major role in reducing congestion and emissions while offering a high-tech mobility experience.
By choosing Dubai as its launchpad outside China, Pony.ai reinforces the city’s status as a global leader in smart city innovation.
