Dubai Police is set to introduce AI for the analysis of traffic accidents, eliminating the need for physical attendance at accident scenes.
This development was unveiled at GITEX Global 2023, where Dubai Police presented a new AI-powered system for reporting minor traffic accidents.
AI-powered system for Instant Accident Evaluation and Reporting
This innovative system can instantly evaluate minor accidents and generate reports for drivers, all without the involvement of human personnel.
The “Minor Accident Reporting” service, which is accessible via the Dubai Police app and website, is at the core of this project.
Currently, drivers provide accident details, which are then reviewed by a police officer responsible for sending reports to the parties involved.
In the forthcoming implementation, AI analysis will be responsible for generating and sending accident reports to both parties, bypassing the need for direct police intervention.
Major General Khaled Nasser Al Razooqi, who serves as the Director of the Artificial Intelligence Department at Dubai Police, provided details about the current status of the AI-powered system designed for managing minor accidents. He confirmed that this system is presently in the development and testing phases.
Al Razooqi explained that the “Minor Accident Reporting” service empowers drivers to self-report accidents, eliminating the necessity for a police vehicle to be physically present at the scene. This not only alleviates traffic congestion but also conserves valuable time for drivers.
He said: “The goal is to enhance public services smartly and innovatively, speeding up the issuance of traffic reports, reducing manual processes by 50 per cent, and decreasing congestion caused by minor accidents”.
Alignment with Dubai Police’s Digital Service Enhancement Goals
Al Razooqi underscored that the advancement of the accident reporting service and the incorporation of AI technologies is in line with the directives of Lieutenant Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, who aims to continuously enhance the efficiency of the police force’s digital services, streamlining procedures for users while saving their time and effort.
The service is designed to be user-friendly. Drivers can easily access it and provide the necessary information, including vehicle plate numbers, driving licence details of both parties and photographs of the vehicles involved.
Subsequently, they await the receipt of reports via email, which can then be forwarded to their insurance companies.
Once the service is upgraded with AI integration, it will involve just four straightforward steps for drivers:
- One of the parties involved must log in to the Dubai Police smart app.
- They should submit their driver’s licence, personal ID, or vehicle plate number and upload images.
- The AI system will determine responsibility and identify damage locations.
- The AI mechanism will then generate the accident report.
