Dubai Police seized over 4,450 scooters and bicycles in the first half of 2024, as per official figures.
Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, underscored the force’s commitment to enhancing traffic awareness and fostering a safety-conscious culture among road users, aiming to prevent traffic accidents and associated fatalities and ensure maximum safety for everyone.
Al Ghaithi affirmed that Dubai Police is focused on improving road safety through intensified traffic enforcement operations.
Dubai Police confiscated scooters and bicycles, targeting traffic violations and irresponsible drivers to make roads safer and reduce fatalities, Al Ghaithi stated.
He emphasised the considerable risk posed by e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes, especially when used in unauthorised areas or on public roads.
Al Ghaithi pointed out that Dubai Police places a high priority on rider safety and the safety of others through ongoing awareness campaigns.
During the first half of 2024, incidents involving e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes resulted in four deaths, one serious injury, 19 moderate injuries, and five minor injuries.
A total of 7,804 violations were recorded, leading to the confiscation of 4,474 scooters and bicycles.
Al Ghaithi outlined various fines for violations, including riding bicycles on roads where the speed limit exceeds 60km/h, dangerous riding, carrying passengers on e-scooters, and riding against traffic.
He stressed the importance of adhering to safety measures such as using designated lanes, wearing appropriate gear and helmets, and avoiding cycling at night or in adverse weather conditions.
Dubai Police also identified fines for offenders, such as:
- Riding bicycles on roads where the speed limit exceeds 60km/h incurs a fine of AED 300.
- Riding bicycles in a manner that endangers the rider or others’ safety results in a fine of AED 300.
- Carrying passengers on an electric scooter carries a fine of AED 300.
- Carrying passengers on bicycles or electric bicycles that do not meet safety standards results in a fine of AED 200.
- Riding bicycles against traffic incurs a fine of AED 200.
Al Ghaithi urged cyclists to comply with traffic laws, utilise designated paths, and prioritise safety. He also encouraged the public to report any negative incidents or dangerous behaviours through the “Police Eye” service or by calling the “We Are All Police” service at 901.
