The RTA reports that it has completed 75 per cent of a Dubai road project aimed at reducing journey times and enhancing traffic flow. This initiative includes the construction of four bridges spanning a total of 2,874 meters, designed to manage a traffic capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour.

The project is a response to directives from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, aimed at enhancing the road network infrastructure in Dubai to accommodate the city’s ongoing urban and population growth. Oversight is provided by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of the Executive Council.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, stated: “The project is part of a plan to enhance Garn Al Sabkha Street, a vital link connecting Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.”
“It aims to ensure smooth traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Road, and Al Asayel Street.”
“Upon completion, the project will reduce the distance and journey time by 40 per cent for traffic travelling from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Deira.”
“It will reduce peak hour journey times from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes. Additionally, it will decrease journey times by 70 per cent from 21 minutes to 7 minutes for traffic travelling from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Yalayis Street in the direction of Jebel Ali Port.”
The project involves constructing four bridges:
The first bridge, spanning 943 meters at the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street, accommodates two lanes in each direction and can handle 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, facilitating traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The second bridge, stretching 601 meters, consists of two lanes and serves traffic moving from Garn Al Sabkha Street East towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and North towards Al Qusais and Deira, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
The third bridge, a two-lane structure spanning 664 meters, aims to ensure smooth traffic flow by separating traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading North to Al Yalayis Street in the direction of Jebel Ali Port, accommodating approximately 3,200 vehicles per hour.
The fourth bridge, spanning 666 meters and consisting of two lanes, facilitates smooth traffic flow by separating traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to the entrances of Dubai Production City, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
The project also includes road works spanning over 7 kilometres, enhancements to surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, as well as street lighting, traffic signs, traffic systems, rainwater drainage systems, and irrigation networks.
The Garn Al Sabkha – Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Roads Intersection Improvement Project complements RTA’s Master Plan to upgrade strategic road networks and arterial east-west routes such as Al Yalayis Street and Expo Road, completed a few years ago.
These networks play a crucial role in Dubai’s transportation system, serving numerous developmental projects located on both sides of the roads and accommodating both current and future traffic volumes, according to Arabian Business.
