Dubai is set to boost its medical tourism sector following a record-breaking year where indirect revenues exceeded $628 million. In a strategic move to strengthen Dubai’s position as a global leader in medical tourism, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on enhancing the Emirate’s healthcare and tourism offerings.
Strategic Partnership to Boost Medical Tourism
The agreement aims to elevate Dubai’s status as a premier healthcare destination, renowned for quality of life and innovative medical services. Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, and Awadh Seghayer Al Ketbi, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, formalized the partnership at a signing ceremony attended by key officials from both sectors.
Focus on Growth and Competitiveness
The MoU outlines a framework for the two organizations to work together to enhance Dubai’s medical tourism industry. Their shared goal is to improve healthcare competitiveness, operational efficiency, and transparency while adhering to international standards. This partnership aligns with the broader Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which seeks to position the city as a global hub for business and leisure.
According to a recent report from the DHA, Dubai experienced notable growth in medical tourism in 2023, welcoming 691,478 international patients. Their combined healthcare expenditure reached AED1.034 billion ($282 million), surpassing the previous year’s figures. The report also highlighted that indirect revenues from medical tourism contributed AED2.305 billion ($628 million) to Dubai’s GDP, with significant growth in sectors like aviation, hospitality, and telecommunications.
Leaders on Dubai’s Medical Tourism Expansion
Helal Almarri emphasized Dubai’s vision under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, saying, “In line with the ambitious vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism is committed to developing partnerships that contribute to enhancing collaboration among various entities. This will elevate the city’s status as a leading global destination for business and leisure.”
He added, “We look forward to attracting investments in pioneering healthcare projects, hosting major global medical conferences, and positioning Dubai as the preferred destination for travelers seeking high-quality services.”
Awadh Al Ketbi echoed these sentiments, highlighting Dubai’s strategic advantages: “Dubai’s geographical location, advanced infrastructure, and rapid achievements across various fields have enhanced its global standing in healthcare. The Emirate continues to leverage its resources, including smart solutions and legislation, to create a secure healthcare environment that attracts leading international hospitals and specialized centers.”
Dubai’s Broader Vision for the Future
The strategic partnership between the DHA and DET is part of Dubai’s larger goal to become a global leader in medical tourism, driving innovation and sustainability in healthcare while enhancing the city’s appeal as a place to visit, live, and work. The initiative supports Dubai’s long-term vision to remain competitive in the global economy and solidify its role as a hub for trade, logistics, and investment.
