In the past, obtaining a driving licence in Dubai was often a daunting and lengthy process. Navigating through the required paperwork and passing all necessary tests was challenging and time-consuming.
Nowadays, the Dubai government has streamlined the process considerably. Aspiring drivers can now obtain their license through eight different methods, sometimes bypassing classes to take the test directly. Additionally, replacing a lost or damaged licence has become a hassle-free process.
Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to replace your driving licence:
Eligibility
Dubai residents with a lost or damaged driving licence can apply for a replacement.
Requirements
Only your Emirates ID is needed to apply for a replacement licence.
Service Fees
- Under 21 years: Dh100
- 21 years and older: Dh300
All applicants will also need Dh20 or more for knowledge and innovation fees.
Validity
The replacement licence will be valid for the remaining period of the original licence.
How to Apply
- RTA Website
- Enter Emirates ID, driver’s licence details, or traffic file number.
- Click ‘Apply for Replacing a Lost/Damaged Driving License’ on the homepage.
- Fill in the ‘Identity Verification’ tab.
- Verify identity via OTP sent to registered phone number.
- Click ‘Next’ and pay required fees with a debit or credit card.
- RTA App
- Log in with RTA or UAE Pass account.
- Tap ‘Renew a driving licence’ and choose ‘Driver Licensing.’
- Select ‘Replace a driving licence.’
- Enter licence number, issue date, traffic code, date of birth, and state whether the licence was lost or damaged.
- Pay required fees and fines with a debit or credit card.

- Provide name, mobile number, and email.
- Type ‘lost my driving licence’ or ‘my licence is damaged.’
- Click ‘Apply Now’ and provide the necessary details.
- Select ‘Lost’ or ‘Damaged’ as the reason for replacement.
- Pay required fees and fines with a debit or credit card.

- Enter driving licence number, issuing authority, birth year, and reason for reprinting (lost or damaged).
- Verify details and complete the transaction.

New Driving Licence
Upon approval, a temporary licence will be emailed while you await the new one. The new licence can be collected from self-service machines or customer happiness centres in Deira or Al Barsha. Apple device users can receive their electronic licence via the Apple Wallet through the RTA Dubai App.
