Dubai Municipality has introduced new artificial intelligence technology at its Central Laboratory to detect Legionella pulmonary bacteria, known for causing respiratory diseases. This marks the first implementation of such a system in the region.
The method accurately identifies live bacterial colonies up to 99 percent of the time and quantifies bacterial counts, resulting in quicker testing with fewer lab supplies required. According to a statement from the Dubai Media Office, results are typically available within 48 hours, a significant improvement compared to the traditional 14-day timeframe.
The introduction of new AI technology at Dubai Central Laboratory enhances the microbiological testing framework. Eng. Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of Dubai Central Laboratory Department, emphasised the municipality’s commitment to advancing digital infrastructure and state-of-the-art systems to enhance Dubai’s health and safety standards.
The new technology aligns with the aim of achieving globally recognised standards for laboratory certification and public wellbeing. Eng. Hind highlighted the revolutionary nature of the Legionella pulmonary bacteria detection method, accredited by the European Water Testing Network and recognised by AOAC International for its accuracy and efficiency in producing results within 48 hours.
With over 100,000 microbiological analyses conducted annually on various commodities such as food, water, and consumer goods, the laboratory ensures the safety of the Dubai market through continuous research and development to address diverse situations promptly.
Prioritising consumer health and safety, the new technology reinforces Dubai Central Laboratory’s microbiological testing framework, monitoring harmful microbial growth and disease transmission across commodities and products.
A wide range of entities, including food, health, industry, and government bodies, benefit from the laboratory’s tests conducted using nearly 5,000 technology systems. Additionally, the provision of technical advice, training, inspection, and calibration services aims to uphold high-quality living standards.
