Dubai hotels are obliged to conduct energy audits on a monthly basis to measure their carbon footprint, starting from March 15, 2023.
The audits will assess Dubai hotels’ consumption of water and electricity, as well as their waste management practices.
Abhayjit Sinha, Strategic Advisor at the Middle East Solar Industry Association, disclosed this information during a panel discussion on renewable energy projects at the Middle East Energy Dubai summit.
The Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) will receive the energy audit reports every month, and hotels that meet the specified threshold will receive incentives, while those that exceed it will face penalties.
The revamped carbon calculator tool, which tracks real-time data for carbon emission sources, has eight parameters to gauge the carbon footprint by the hospitality sector.
The Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) initiative is responsible for these new regulations, which aim to help the UAE achieve its clean energy objectives and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) 2030.
