Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, has given the green light to the second phase of conserving Dubai’s heritage architecture.
This initiative aims to protect 35 significant sites and buildings dating from the 1960s to the 1990s, following the completion of the initial phase which focused on earlier structures.
“Through the preservation of our heritage architecture, we aim to foster a deeper appreciation among citizens, residents, and visitors for the factors that have contributed to shaping the emirate into the vibrant metropolis it is today,” stated Sheikh Hamdan.
Dubai’s Second Heritage Phase to Protect 35 Landmarks
The second phase of the Dubai heritage architecture project will safeguard 35 sites and buildings, including landmarks like the Clock Tower, Rashid Tower, and Dubai Petroleum Building, as well as others listed in the statement released by the Dubai Media Office.
Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, highlighted that the restoration efforts pay homage to the historical significance of these sites and aspire to transmit this rich heritage to forthcoming generations.
The selected buildings serve as embodiments of Dubai’s architectural legacy from that era, narrating the tale of its social, economic, and modern metamorphoses.
Sheikh Hamdan has directed efforts to enhance the appeal of both historical districts and contemporary landmarks, underscoring the city’s commitment to honouring its history and safeguarding its architectural treasures for posterity.
“We have a duty to commemorate our past and preserve our architectural gems for the generations to come. The heritage areas encompassed by the project encapsulate decades of progress and signify the beginning of Dubai’s resurgence. Nestled within modern Dubai, these sites serve as a link between the past and the city’s future aspirations. Dubai extends an invitation to the world to witness its past, present, and future, converging in one locale,” added Sheikh Hamdan.
