Dubai has launched the trial operation of the world’s first 3D-printed electric abras. These innovative boats, capable of ferrying 20 passengers at a time, aim to reduce operational and maintenance costs by 30%. The trial phase, overseen by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), will evaluate the performance of these electric abras.
The Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line will operate the abra on a trial basis. The RTA, led by Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors Mattar Al Tayer, will compare the performance of the electric abra, powered by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries, with that of the current 20-passenger fibreglass abras.
These boats, designed to maintain their traditional identity, measure 11 meters in length and 3.1 meters in width. The 3D-printing process slashes manufacturing time by 90%, aligning with RTA’s environmental sustainability strategy for maritime transport.
Improvement of Stations
Alongside the trial phase of the 3D-printed abras, the RTA is upgrading traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek to enhance safety and security. Over 14 million passengers use these stations annually. The project includes improvements to four traditional abra stations. The RTA completed upgrades to the Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station in February 2023, followed by the Deira Old Souq Station in February 2024. The RTA plans to complete the upgrades to the Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station by August 2025..
The enhancements include replacing floating docks, providing retail spaces, facilities for employees and operators, and adding bike racks. The RTA will increase passenger waiting areas, add priority seating, and provide dedicated spaces for People of Determination. Additionally, the RTA plans to widen docking spaces by 15% and increase shaded waiting areas by 100%. Sustainable, low-cost materials used in construction will reduce annual maintenance costs by 10%.
Since the completion of the Dubai Water Canal, the marine transport sector has grown in terms of transport means, stations, and passengers. With the completion of tourist facilities along the canal and the construction of transport stations, marine transport, including abras and boats, is expected to become a preferred choice for citizens, residents, and tourists to enjoy the scenic views of Dubai Creek, the Dubai Water Canal, and Dubai beaches.
