Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced that its Green Hydrogen project has achieved a key milestone, generating over 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since its inauguration in May 2021.
Most of this production has been utilised to generate more than 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean energy through a hydrogen gas engine, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by over 515 tonnes. Additionally, more than 11 tonnes were supplied to ENOC, supporting hydrogen-powered vehicles at its ‘Service Station of the Future’ during Expo 2020 Dubai and other industrial uses.
The initiative is the first in the Middle East and North Africa region to produce green hydrogen using solar energy. Developed in partnership with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, the project generates approximately 20 kilogrammes of hydrogen per hour, supported by a storage tank capable of holding up to 12 hours of production.
The stored hydrogen is also deployed for night-time electricity generation through a hydrogen gas motor, with a capacity of around 300 kilowatts of electrical power.
