Aramco and TotalEnergies have announced a collaborative agreement worth $11B to commence the construction of a petrochemicals complex in Saudi Arabia, according to a joint statement issued by the companies on Saturday.
“Aramco and TotalEnergies today awarded Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts for the $11B “Amiral” complex, a future world-scale petrochemicals facility expansion at the SATORP refinery in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the statement read.
In confirming their commitment to constructing the “Amiral” petrochemical facility in Saudi Arabia, Aramco and TotalEnergies have announced the final investment decision (FID). Moreover, the integration of the facility with the existing SATORP refinery in Jubail will facilitate the conversion of domestic naphtha and refinery off-gases into higher-value chemicals, thus enhancing Aramco’s liquids-to-chemicals strategy. Additionally, the company will supplement the process by supplying ethane and natural gasoline. The complex itself boasts a mixed feed cracker, a pioneering feature in the region, capable of producing 1.65 million tons per annum of ethylene, integrated with a refinery. Furthermore, the facility will house advanced polyethene units utilizing Advanced Dual Loop technology, alongside a butadiene extraction unit and other associated derivatives units.
Construction Scheduled for Early 2023, and Commercial Operations in 2027
Aramco and TotalEnergies will each invest $4 billion in the project, which has an estimated total cost of $11 billion. They have scheduled the commencement of construction in early 2023, with the expectation of starting commercial operations in 2027.
Aramco’s CEO, Amin H. Nasser, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the potential of cutting-edge technologies that support the circular economy and enhance the production of advanced chemicals. TotalEnergies’ Chairman and CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, praised the expansion project as a testament to the companies’ strong partnership and their commitment to sustainable growth in the petrochemical sector.
The collaboration between Aramco and TotalEnergies is set to bring significant advancements to the Kingdom’s industrial progress and bolster its position as a global leader in the petrochemical industry.
