Al Wehda caused a major upset in the King Cup of Champions by eliminating Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr side in Saudi Arabia. Despite being the underdogs against the much-fancied Riyadh team, who are currently at the top of the Saudi Pro League table, Al Wehda secured a 1-0 victory through a stunning overhead kick by French striker Jean-David Beauguel in the 23rd minute.
Al Nassr dominated possession and launched several attacks, but Al Wehda’s defense held strong. Al Nassr’s hopes were dashed when two VAR appeals for a penalty were turned down in the dying minutes of the game. In their previous encounter, Ronaldo had scored all four goals in a 4-0 victory, but this time, Al Wehda emerged as the winner.
Al Wehda has advanced to the final and will face Al Hilal. This means that Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr side has missed out on a chance for a trophy this season. Their hopes now rest on the league where they currently hold second place, trailing Al Ittihad by three points, who also have an additional game in hand. Al Nassr’s next match is scheduled for Friday, April 28 against Al Raed, who are currently in the 11th position.
