Adnoc has introduced the first “high-speed” green hydrogen pilot refuelling station in the region to trial a fleet of vehicles powered by hydrogen. The station, operated by Adnoc Distribution in Masdar City, will generate green hydrogen through an electrolyser that runs on clean grid electricity, as stated by the company on Friday.
Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Adnoc’s Executive Director of Low Carbon Solutions and International Growth, remarked, “We are pleased to unveil this distinctive high-speed green hydrogen refuelling station, aligning with the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy. Adnoc remains committed to collaborating with both local and international firms on pioneering technologies and low-carbon solutions, thereby expediting the process of decarbonisation.”
Pilot Hydrogen Station Secures ‘Green’ Certification
The hydrogen provided at the pilot station will receive certification as “green” from solar sources according to the International REC Standard, a global certification organization.
The project aims to collect data on the sustained feasibility of hydrogen vehicles in the UAE, as stated by the company.
The objective is to initiate with B2B [business-to-business] clients. We will commence with cars, taxis, and buses,” stated Bader Al Lamki, CEO of Adnoc Distribution, during The National event.
“Over a three-month period, we will amass data, scrutinize and comprehend consumer behaviours, operational parameters, with the hope that this serves as a foundation for further expansion of the solution.” A second station in Dubai Golf City is set to open “very soon,” providing another refuelling point in the emirate of Dubai, according to Mr Al Lamki.
The project receives backing from the Integrated Transport Centre in Abu Dhabi, and the refueller is supplied by Linde, an industrial gases and engineering company.
Toyota, Al Futtaim Motors, and BMW are supplying the hydrogen vehicles, which will be tested by taxi companies such as Tawasul, according to The National News.
Driving Sustainability: UAE’s Hydrogen Revolution and Adnoc’s $15B Investment
Hydrogen, producible from both renewable and conventional energy, is anticipated to play a crucial role as economies and industries transition to a low-carbon world.
Hydrogen exists in various forms, including blue, green, and grey. Blue and grey hydrogen are derived from natural gas, while green hydrogen is produced through water molecule electrolysis.
Adnoc has earmarked $15B for investment in various projects by 2030, contributing to the realization of its low-carbon growth strategy goals.
The UAE aims to produce 1.4 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2031 and increase it to 15 million tonnes per year by 2050.
“We welcome this collaboration with Adnoc to trial hydrogen in the UAE. Currently, transportation constitutes around 20 per cent of the total global carbon output, and we must explore every available technology on our path to net zero,” remarked Abdulla Balalaa, chairman of Masdar City.
