Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, ADNEC Group has officially launched the Challenge Sir Bani Yas Triathlon, marking the first-ever long-distance triathlon in the Middle East. Scheduled to take place from April 3-7, 2025, this prestigious event will be held annually.
Organised by ADNEC Group in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Sports Council and in partnership with the Challenge Family, the triathlon is part of a global series featuring 35 races across 27 countries, attracting 75,000 athletes worldwide.
The inaugural event will also see over 2,800 participants and welcome 1,500 local and international visitors. The long-distance race consists of a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km cycle, and a 42.2 km run, unfolding over a 17-hour duration. A middle-distance triathlon option will also be available, alongside a variety of community activities for both participants and spectators.
Significant Partnership and Vision
H.E. Arif Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said, “We are delighted to partner with ADNEC Group, offering comprehensive technical and logistical support to host the inaugural Challenge Sir Bani Yas. Our aim is to ensure the event reflects the emirate’s esteemed reputation and stature at both regional and international levels.”
He also emphasized that hosting a long-distance triathlon for the first time in the Middle East showcases Abu Dhabi’s capability to organize large-scale global sporting events, aligning with the city’s strategic vision of becoming a global sports hub.
A New Milestone in Abu Dhabi’s Sports Tourism
Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNEC Group, highlighted the race’s significance in boosting tourism and sports events in the region. He stated, “The introduction of this race aligns with ADNEC Group’s strategy to cultivate and draw major international events across several crucial sectors. This endeavour is in accordance with the vision of the wise leadership, emphasising Abu Dhabi’s stature as the hub of specialised events in the region.”
He added that Sir Bani Yas Island was chosen for its tourism potential and advanced infrastructure, making it an ideal location for this international event. Also, the race is expected to enhance economic contributions through tourism, increase hotel occupancy, and drive growth among small and medium enterprises.
Also, the event is expected to raise Sir Bani Yas Island’s profile, showcasing its rich offerings to an international audience and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s status as a top-tier sports tourism destination.

In addition to the main triathlon, participants and visitors can look forward to a series of community and family-oriented events, including horseback riding, snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking on the island.
