The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has unveiled the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, a $2 billion initiative aimed at accelerating development projects, promoting innovative solutions, and enhancing global water security. The platform aims to mobilize funding from both local and international financial institutions, with an initial $1 billion (AED3.67 billion) allocated between 2026 and 2030 to benefit approximately 10 million people.
Focus on innovation, access, and partnerships
The platform targets developing countries, enhancing access to clean and safe water while fostering advanced technologies for water management and food security. It also seeks to promote strategic partnerships, co-financing, and environmental sustainability, reflecting the UAE’s leadership in global development. Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, ADFD director-general, noted that the initiative forms a key component of the UAE’s 2030 strategy, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation.
Global engagement and financing mechanisms
Fatima Ateeq Al Mazrouei, director of ADFD’s Support Services Department, emphasized the platform’s role in addressing critical water sector challenges through coordinated local and international efforts. The initiative will support impactful projects via diverse financing mechanisms, including development finance, private-sector investment, export financing, guarantees, and equity participation. ADFD plans to further expand the platform by implementing cooperation agreements, funding innovative programs, supporting research, and hosting awareness initiatives to ensure sustainable water resources and improved quality of life globally.
