The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has solidified its long-standing collaboration with the Government of Bahrain by financing 33 major projects valued at AED23 billion ($6.3 billion). This partnership, which began in 1974, has bolstered Bahrain’s economy by investing in housing, energy, transport, and health, aligning with the Kingdom’s Economic Vision 2030.
The ongoing support from ADFD plays a pivotal role in Bahrain’s development, addressing critical national priorities while creating jobs and enhancing citizen services. The projects funded by the organization exemplify Gulf cooperation in sustainable development, providing financial and technical aid to help Bahrain meet its fiscal and developmental goals for 2023 and 2024.
Historic Ties and Strategic Vision
The partnership between the UAE and Bahrain underscores decades of mutual cooperation. Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, extended his congratulations to Bahrain on its National Day, emphasizing the enduring collaboration between the nations.
“The strategic relationship with the government of Bahrain is a unique model of development cooperation that has endured for more than 50 years. This partnership has resulted in significant achievements in many economic sectors, contributing to achieving comprehensive development that benefits Bahraini society,” said Al Suwaidi.
He highlighted the Gulf Development Fund Program, initiated in 2013, as a major milestone of this partnership, adding:
“The program exemplifies the support the UAE provides on sustainable development through ADFD, strengthening infrastructure and vital sectors in alignment with the Kingdom’s development goals.”

- Salman City Housing Project:
Valued at AED1.9 billion ($517 million), this initiative delivers 2,400 housing units, with 1,382 completed in its first phase. - East Sitra Land Reclamation Project:
With a budget of AED914 million ($249 million), this project aims to develop 4,500 housing units, contributing to urban expansion. - Mohammed Bin Khalifa Specialized Cardiac Centre:
An investment of AED937 million ($255 million) has created a specialized cardiac care center, reducing the need for citizens to seek treatment abroad. - Bahrain International Airport Development:
The AED3.7 billion ($1 billion) project increased the airport’s capacity to 14 million passengers annually, enhancing its status as a regional hub. - Sheikh Zayed Road Expansion:
At a cost of AED337 million ($92 million), this initiative eases traffic congestion, improving transport infrastructure for 50,000 vehicles daily. - Water Transmission Network Development:
Worth AED187 million ($51 million), this project upgrades water infrastructure, ensuring sustainability in residential and industrial zones. - Northern City Sewage Treatment:
A AED415 million ($113 million) project focused on reusing treated sewage water for agricultural irrigation, balancing environmental sustainability with urban growth.
