Abu Dhabi has successfully completed a drone delivery trial in collaboration with the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) and LODD Autonomous, while also revealing plans for a 250kg-capacity VTOL cargo aircraft set to reshape logistics, enhance supply chain efficiency, and reinforce the emirate’s smart mobility goals.
The ITC, an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, carried out the trial using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in partnership with LODD Autonomous, a specialist in smart delivery and aerial logistics technologies. In the demonstration, a drone equipped with a robotic arm transported a parcel from Al Samha to KIZAD, guided by an advanced navigation system that ensured precise and efficient operations.
The initiative forms part of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council’s (SASC) strategy to position Abu Dhabi as a global leader in smart mobility. ITC highlighted that the project advances the adoption of intelligent transport systems designed to boost service efficiency, support sustainable infrastructure, and enhance quality of life across the emirate.
The ITC also regulates and oversees drone operations through the Unified National Platform for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), ensuring adherence to safety standards, privacy regulations, and airspace security.
In parallel with the delivery trial, LODD Autonomous showcased progress on its hybrid autonomous aircraft programme, “Hili” (VTOL). Designed to transport heavy cargo, the aircraft is capable of carrying payloads of up to 250kg across 300km, powered by a hybrid system that integrates electric motors with an internal combustion engine.
