Abu Dhabi Airports has teamed up with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (UAEICP) to introduce the Biometric Smart Travel initiative at Zayed International Airport.
Developed in collaboration with AI specialist Next 50, the project will be implemented in phases to incorporate biometric authentication systems across the airport’s security and operational points.
Using existing databases, the system automatically verifies travellers, eliminating the requirement for prior registration for departing passengers.
Abu Dhabi Airport speeds up passenger processing with new technology
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security to roll out this innovative project at our advanced terminal at Zayed International Airport. Our commitment is to enhance the traveller journey by offering efficient and seamless services through advanced biometric systems. By 2025, we aim to extend these systems across all security and operational points and other airlines. This collaboration enables Abu Dhabi Airports to continue providing top-notch passenger services, prioritising traveller security and safety, and delivering an exceptional global travel experience across our airports,” said Andrew Murphy, Chief Information Officer at Zayed International Airport.
Abu Dhabi Airports seeks to enhance the traveller experience and streamline travel processes while upholding aviation security standards.
Initially launched in November 2023 with the inauguration of the new terminal at Zayed International Airport, the project includes automated traveller registration, self-service baggage drop-off, and facial recognition at e-gates and boarding gates.
The next phase involves deploying biometric systems for five additional airlines at check-in and all boarding gates, as well as installing new e-gates in transit areas.
Future expansion plans encompass the Etihad Airways lounge and duty-free retail outlets.
“The Biometric Smart Travel project aims to elevate the travel experience at Zayed International Airport from curbside to boarding gate, ensuring robust levels of security and safety. We’re pleased to implement this project and collaborate with Abu Dhabi Airports, the premier airport operator in Abu Dhabi and the emirate’s global gateway,” stated Saeed Saif Al Khaili, General Director at the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security.
“The Biometric Smart Travel project reduces traveller service time from 25 seconds to just seven seconds, integrating ticket and travel document verification into a single process and reducing reliance on human resources through smart gate identity verification,” he added.
The project is anticipated to enhance airline efficiency by minimizing the need for infrastructure expansions and improving detection of fraud in identification documents.
