Dr Deepak Mittal, a distinguished 1998-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Ministry of External Affairs announced the appointment on Tuesday, marking another important step in strengthening India–UAE diplomatic relations.
Dr Mittal will succeed Sunjay Sudhir, who assumed the role in November 2021. His appointment comes at a crucial juncture as India and the UAE continue to expand cooperation across sectors such as trade, investment, energy, and technology. The UAE is one of India’s largest trading partners and home to a significant Indian diaspora, making this role vital to advancing bilateral ties.
Currently serving as Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, Dr Mittal brings extensive diplomatic experience to his new role. He has held key assignments throughout his career, including serving as India’s Ambassador to Qatar from August 2020 to March 2023. During his tenure in Doha, he worked on enhancing energy cooperation, facilitating trade partnerships, and building stronger cultural exchanges between India and Qatar.
Dr Mittal’s leadership in Abu Dhabi is expected to further accelerate collaboration in priority areas such as renewable energy, fintech, defense, and space technology. With both countries emphasizing innovation and economic diversification, his role will be instrumental in shaping the future of this strategic partnership.
The appointment of Dr Deepak Mittal underscores the significance New Delhi places on the UAE within its foreign policy framework. His track record as a seasoned diplomat and his experience in handling sensitive and high-level assignments equip him to lead this important mission with confidence.
