Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated a new 800-metre tunnel featuring four lanes in each direction. The tunnel is part of the broader Umm Suqeim Street Development Project and is designed to improve traffic flow across residential and urban zones with a combined population of over one million.
Spanning from the intersection of Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, the tunnel is expected to significantly ease congestion. Travel time along this stretch will be cut by nearly 61 per cent—from 9.7 minutes to just 3.8 minutes, while increasing the street’s overall capacity to accommodate 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, stated: “This initiative enhances connectivity across four vital routes in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.”
He added: “The upgrade boosts Umm Suqeim Street’s capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, and slashes travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road by 61 per cent.”
The development directly benefits key residential and business areas such as Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, Dubai Hills, Arjan, and Dubai Science Park, supporting a population of over one million people.
