Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is building 16.5 km of internal roads in Al Awir 1 to enhance infrastructure in residential areas, supporting Dubai’s growth and improving residents’ quality of life.
The project includes a new entrance from Emirates Road, intersections, and roundabouts to improve accessibility and reduce travel times. Additionally, a new lane will extend from Al Awir 1 to Sharjah on Emirates Road, increasing capacity by 16 per cent.
Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director-General, said, “This project supports RTA’s mission to improve infrastructure in residential areas, addressing traffic congestion and enhancing safety. Al Awir 1 is a key residential area with villas, mosques, and service buildings.” The project also involves 5 km of internal roads within the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment and a 7.5 km road connecting Emirates Road to Al Awir 1, featuring dual lanes, roundabouts, and U-turns.
The improvements will double access capacity, accommodating 3,000 vehicles per hour, while the new Emirates Road lane will boost traffic flow.
RTA has also started similar projects in Al Warqa, Nadd Hessa, Wadi Al Safa 3, and Al Barsha South. In Al Warqa, new entrances and signalised intersections aim to reduce travel time by 80 per cent, while new access points in Nadd Hessa will serve 300,000 residents. In Wadi Al Safa 3, a 4 km entrance will cut travel times from 10 to 2 minutes.
Recently, RTA upgraded Al Barsha South’s roads by adding lanes and a third left-turn lane at Hessa Street, increasing capacity from 6,000 to 9,000 vehicles per hour and cutting signal wait times to one minute. These projects collectively improve connectivity and ease congestion across Dubai.
