The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched a measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) programme to streamline the monitoring of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the emirate, aligning with global climate standards.
The initiative supports Abu Dhabi’s shift to a low-carbon economy, targeting emission-heavy sectors and encouraging innovation to combat climate change. It also lays the groundwork for a potential carbon pricing mechanism, enabling industries to align with international competitiveness and climate frameworks like the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.
Dr Shaikha Al Dhaheri, EAD’s secretary-general, stated, “Abu Dhabi has strengthened its leadership in climate action by collaborating with government, industrial, and energy partners. Transparent data is vital for evaluating policies such as carbon pricing, helping reduce emissions by 22 per cent by 2027 and supporting sustainable economic growth. These steps are crucial for the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals.”
The MRV system mandates major emitters to track, report, and verify emissions through third-party assessments, with the first reports due in 2026. Developed in collaboration with public and private stakeholders, it ensures cross-sectoral alignment.
Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, under-secretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, highlighted the programme’s importance, noting, “MRV systems are essential for accurate carbon emission data and driving effective climate action.”
