Dubai is set to transform into a pedestrian-friendly city with the announcement of the monumental ‘Dubai Walk’ project. Revealed on Saturday, December 7, by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, this ambitious initiative aims to construct a 3,300km integrated walking network.
The plan includes 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels, 112km of scenic waterfront pathways, 124km of green walking trails, and 150km of rural and mountainous pedestrian paths.
Initial Pathway Highlights
The initial rollout will focus on two iconic locations:
- Museum of the Future:
Reflecting Dubai’s forward-thinking vision, this location will feature a 2km climate-controlled bridge, open spaces, commercial zones, and seamless connections to major hubs like Dubai World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers, and metro stations. - Al Ras:
Offering a journey into Dubai’s historical roots, this 15km trail will revive the charm of the city’s past, blending waterfront attractions with green spaces and cultural displays.
A Multi-Phase Plan
The project will be implemented in three phases, initially targeting areas such as Al Barsha 2, Al Khawaneej 2, and Al Mizhar 1, before expanding to 160 neighbourhoods. This includes connecting residential areas, urban centres, and tourist hotspots.
Key bridges to be constructed include:
- Al Ittihad Street Bridge: Linking Al Nahda and Al Mamzar.
- Tripoli Street Bridge: Connecting Al Warqa and Mirdif.
- Dubai-Al Ain Road Bridge: Joining Dubai Silicon Oasis and Dubailand.
By 2040, over 6,500km of interconnected pathways will be established. Of these, 3,300km will be newly constructed, 2,300km rehabilitated, and an additional 900km added post-2040.
Smart App to Promote Walking
To encourage walking, a smart application will be introduced, allowing users to track routes, steps, and duration. It will offer incentives, such as redeemable points for discounts or e-wallet credits. The app will also highlight local attractions, events, and art displays.
A Vision for Better Living
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that this initiative aligns with Dubai’s vision of creating a city where residents lead “the best, happiest, most comfortable, healthy, and balanced lives.” He stated:
“In the coming years, residents of Dubai will be able to move around by walking, cycling on dedicated tracks, using the city’s extensive road and bridge network, riding the metro with its new lines, taking water taxis, or even flying taxis on designated aerial routes.”
The project is also in line with Dubai’s ’20-minute city’ plan, where, by 2040, residents will be able to access essential services and destinations within a 20-minute walk or bike ride.
