Rishi Sunak has announced the dates for a General Election in the United Kingdom. The UK will hold its General Election to choose the next government on 4 July 2024.
He made the announcement in a surprise statement from the doorstep of 10 Downing Street in London.
Announcing the General Election date, Sunak stated: “Our economy is now growing faster than anyone predicted, outpacing Germany, France, and the United States. “
“This means that the pressure on prices will ease, and mortgage rates will decrease. This proves that the plan and priorities I set out are effective.”
“I understand that it has not always been easy. Some of you will only just be starting to feel the benefits, and for some, it might still be difficult when you check your bank balance.”
“The question now is how, and who do you trust, to turn that foundation into a secure future for you, your family, and our country? Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future.”
“To decide whether we want to build on the progress we have made or risk going back to square one with no plan and no certainty.”
UK Parliament Dissolved as General Election Set for 4 July Amidst Conservative Party’s Struggles
“Earlier today, I asked His Majesty the King to dissolve Parliament. The King has granted this request, and we will have a General Election on 4 July.”
The Conservative Party, which has had five leaders and prime ministers in 14 years, is currently trailing behind Keir Starmer’s main opposition Labour Party in current polling.
A YouGov poll shows that UK voter intention for the next election has the Conservatives at 20 per cent, while Labour stands at 47 per cent.
The Conservatives’ years in power have seen economic troubles, starting with the fallout from the 2008 global financial crash and recently a cost-of-living crisis driven by high inflation and energy prices.
