Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revealed a substantial contract has been granted for the Enhancement of Umm Suqeim Street Project, following the guidance of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The initiative, priced at AED 332M, seeks to upgrade the road network infrastructure to accommodate the city’s continuous expansion and ensure efficient traffic flow.
Extending over 4.6 kilometres from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, the project includes multiple enhancements, according to an official statement by the authority.
Dubai’s Umm Suqeim Street to Get New 800m Tunnel and Signalised Intersection
A new 800-meter tunnel will be constructed on Dubai Umm Suqeim Street near Kings School, featuring four lanes in each direction. Additionally, a signalised surface intersection will be implemented as part of the broader project.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the Enhancement of Umm Suqeim Street Project is pivotal for enhancing connectivity between east-west and north-south streets.
Al Tayer underscored the project’s importance in supporting the RTA’s ongoing efforts to boost the corridor’s efficiency.
“This project aims to enhance the connectivity of four major traffic corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road,” Al Tayer stated.
“It will increase the streets’ capacity to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, ensuring a smoother traffic flow and significantly reducing travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes. The project will serve various residential and development areas, including Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills, with an estimated population of about two million people,” he added.
The Enhancement of Umm Suqeim Street Project builds upon previous completed projects in the region
In 2013, the RTA widened Umm Suqeim Street from the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road to the intersection of Al Khail Road. This phase involved constructing two bridges with three lanes in both directions, as well as three pedestrian bridges to enhance accessibility between Al Quoz and Al Barsha.
Moreover, in 2020, the RTA opened a central 500-metre bridge as part of the Bridges and Roads leading to Dubai Hills Mall Project. Located at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and the entrances of Dubai Hills and Al Barsha areas, the bridge boasts four lanes in each direction and has a capacity of handling up to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
Last year, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded a contract for the Hessa Street Improvement Project, valued at AED 689M, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion for commuters.
The RTA had previously unveiled new plans to develop key roads such as Hessa Street and Umm Suqeim Street, according to Arabian Business.
